Richard Carr VIEW PROFILE

Richard Carr

Richard passed peacefully during sleep on July 19, 2017, in Arequipa, a Peruvian colonial-era city where the climate favored his health. Surviving are a son, Wuthisak (Woody), and a daughter, Samantha.
His father managed the A&P in Highland Park during Richard's years at Green Bay Road and Elm Place schools. The family later moved to Deerfield. He served in the Marines and attended graduate school in the Milwaukee area. During the '70s, living in San Diego, he ran a business that took him worldwide. At the time of our 50th reunion he was living in Corpus Christi, Texas.
In Thailand he married and became devoted to his wife’s son, Woody, whom he re-located to the U.S.
During retirement Richard was an inveterate world traveler, usually with just a knapsack. On one journey he largely hitchhiked from Cairo Egypt to Cape Town, South Africa.
More recently he ventured through the Americas, and south to Tierra del Fuego, before settling in Peru.

Wuthisak (a Thai name aka Woody), Richard's son, reports that Richard passed peacefully on July 19 in bed during night's sleep in Ariquipa, Peru where he had recently settled.
Richard & I started in Ms Hedley's Greenbay Road School kindergarten, then to Elm Place & on to HPHS. His family's move to Deerfield & then different home rooms, etc. caused us to loose touch & years flew by.
7 years ago I extended a hand to a stranger at a local beach bar hangout & amazingly, since at least 1959, before I could say my name he said it & I did the same with him.. Richard Carr..!! He was fresh from Africa, headed for South America (see his rather cryptic profile) but over a pitcher we deep dredged from kindergarten to present & with his subsequent returns stateside & more dredging developed a strong friendship.
Richard distilled life to it's (his) essence, didn't" sweat the small stuff", despite a wee hitch in his get-around, kept on truck'n. He was a keen observer & travel was his passion.
He had a productive & adventurous life. He was dedicated to Woody & family.
He is truly missed but left our world a better place & showed us a viable path forward.
He will be re-patriated & I'll try to provide details.

That's an amazing story, Wendell. Thank you for your contribution to his legacy. I don't have many clear memories of Richard, but obviously he was a special being. God bless his soul... Penny Weiskopf

This is sad news! He was a wonderful classmate and I had no idea of his life and travels after HPHS but he obviously lived life his way and to the fullest. God's speed Richard!
