Mike was an admirable human being: kind, brainy, capable, empathetic. Starting from before his days on the floor of the tumultuous 1968 convention, he was well-connected in Chicago. And people found it helpful to be connected to him. He certainly taught me a lot about local politics and expanded my horizons.

When Rupert Murdoch first came to town as an owner, Mike threw a cocktail party so that many of us could meet him. Once he deputized me to round up some journalists and take futurist Herman Kahn to dinner at the press club. Another meal was with George Ryan before his terms as governor and prison inmate.

Mike was our attorney, although we didn’t need much attorneying. More important, he was our friend, and we regret not seeing more of him in his last years.

Mike and I were friendly competitors in high school.  He was "wicked smart,"  and a wise-cracker;  I guess I was, too.  We shared several classes; i think one was in creative writing?  I'm not surprised to read that he was highly respected as an attorney and friend.
