Melinda McMULLEN (Schneberger)

Melinda McMULLEN (Schneberger)

Date of Death:  October 21, 1988

Age:  47

Residence at Time of Death:   Battle Creek, Michigan

Cause of Death:  Melinda had fought a lifelong battle against severe asthma, which finally claimed her life.

Family:  Husband James, daughter Ellen and son Jim

Melinda's Life:   Melinda had closer ties than most to HPHS.  Her father, "Doc" McMullen, was a long time faculty member, who taught biology as part of what was then called the Core Department.  She chose Northern Arizona University as her college, in part because the dry desert air was good for her chronic asthma condition.  In school she met and fell in love with James Schneberger, an architectural student from Michigan.  They were married in 1961.  They spent most of their lives together in Battle Creek, where James established his architecture practice.

But they also had a farm in the small town of Cross Village, where Melinda enjoyed riding and caring for the horses.  She threw herself into numerous civic activities such as the United Way.  one year she was president of the local symphony orchestra association.  She also enjoyed doing some writing in her spare time.

Told that Melinda's reputation among HPHS friends was that of a shy, quiet girl, her daughter Ellen responded with a chuckle, "Well, somehow, along the way, she got over that."
